Prague, October 20, 2022
October 20 marks World Osteoporosis Day, drawing attention to a condition often referred to by experts as the “silent thief of bones” due to its gradual depletion of bone tissue. Osteoporosis weakens bones, reducing their strength and flexibility, making them more prone to fractures. According to the Czech State Health Institute, osteoporosis affects up to 1 million Czechs, many of whom are unaware of their diagnosis since symptoms often only become evident after the first fracture. The global number of osteoporosis cases continues to rise. In light of this, Trime, a Czech producer of premium dietary supplements, offers advice on how to prevent bone loss.
"October 20 is a day to raise awareness about osteoporosis, a chronic condition affecting a significant portion of the population. It leads to the gradual thinning and weakening of bone tissue, resulting in sudden and difficult-to-heal fractures," explains Michal Kočí, founder and CEO of Trime. The company aims to spread awareness about the disease and help prevent it with their premium nutritional supplements.
A Growing Problem
According to the State Health Institute, osteoporosis affects up to 10% of Czechs. While its impact is usually felt after age 50, the condition develops slowly and subtly, often going undetected until the first fracture occurs. Data shows that one in five men and one in three women over 50 will develop osteoporosis, but only 10–20% of patients receive treatment. Experts predict a 35% increase in osteoporotic fractures by 2034 compared to 2019. However, Trime emphasizes that effective strategies exist to prevent osteoporosis.
Smart Supplementation
The most common causes of osteoporosis include deficiencies in vitamins D3 and K2, calcium, and magnesium – essential nutrients for building bone tissue. "As with many other diseases, additional factors also contribute to osteoporosis, such as the use of certain medications, especially glucocorticoids, excessive smoking, alcohol and caffeine consumption, and lack of physical activity," explains Jakub Přibyl, nutrition specialist and product developer at Trime.
Alongside a healthier lifestyle, proper supplementation can help prevent osteoporosis. However, Trime points out that the dietary supplement industry faces global challenges, which can mislead consumers instead of providing effective solutions. Many supplements are marketed without considering broader nutritional contexts.
"When taking supplements for musculoskeletal health, it’s crucial to focus not only on quality but also on the correct amounts and ratios of active ingredients. For instance, high doses of calcium without adequate vitamin D3 and K2 intake can be harmful. Excess calcium could accumulate in soft tissues, such as blood vessels, contributing to atherosclerosis. Many supplement manufacturers overlook these issues, which is why Trime has developed a product that provides the key nutrients essential for bone mineralization," adds Přibyl.
Increasing Demand for Supplements
Last year, Czechs spent 14 billion CZK on dietary supplements. According to the analytics company GWR, the European dietary supplement market was valued at approximately €61 billion in 2021 and is expected to grow annually by 5.8% until 2030. Trime highlights the lack of premium products and market segmentation as significant issues – Central European consumers often have limited access to high-quality supplements and must rely on expensive imports from the U.S. or U.K.
"There is virtually no manufacturer of premium health and preventive supplements in Central Europe offering direct-to-consumer products. Customers are left to rely on distributors and online stores, purchasing higher-margin supplements from multiple manufacturers, often without expert guidance. Our vision is to provide the highest quality supplements directly to customers, alongside verified information free from myths and misleading marketing," concludes Kočí.
